Chiezika “Chez” Nwanyanwu Executive Treasurer

Q. How did you get involved in the union?

A. I started working for USPS in October 2015 at LA P&DC on Tour 1. In January 2018, I had an investigative interview and the late Toni Rose was my shop steward. I defended myself and challenged management to the point where she didn’t have to say a word. After the interview, she asked me if I was interested in being a shop steward. A few weeks later, former Parliamentarian and friend Louis Mitchell asked me about running for Secretary-Treasurer…and the rest is history!

I became the first PSE in APWU history to be elected as a full-time officer! Although I was brand new to the union, I have over 20 years of experience in leadership, finance, and operations. More importantly, I love helping people and being of service, so I knew that being Secretary-Treasurer was the perfect fit. I had no clue what I was getting myself into with the union, and to say this has been a journey is an understatement…but I thank God for His guidance and giving me the strength needed to serve our membership!

Q. What have you accomplished since being elected?

A. Since being elected, I’ve saved the union over $130,000 and qualified the union for a $10,000 grant. Additionally, I was the driving force in finding a new office for our local, which will save the union an additional $110,000 during its initial lease. Furthermore, I’ve used my personal creditworthiness to help the union establish business credit, which is essential should the union want to purchase real estate in the future. I am proud to have led our union into being in its best financial shape in its history, but I understand that there is more work that needs to be done. I will continue to grow the local’s assets while working to serve our members!

I serve in the following roles:

● Financial Officer
● Website Creator & Chief Editor
● Chairperson of the Ways & Means Committee
● Chairperson of the Board of Trustees
● Member of Labor Management Committee
● Member of Negotiating Team
● Member of Joint EAP Committee
● Shop Steward

I’ve gained new friends and family through APWU and I’m grateful for this! I’m thankful to the membership for entrusting me with this leadership role and I don’t take it lightly. I look forward to working with you to improve this union and making this local shine!
